Iraq crisis: End 'very near' for Christianity after Isis takeover, says Bishop

The vicar of the only Anglican church in Iraq has warned the end for Christians in the country appears "very near" as he appealed for help after a deadline set by Islamic militants to convert or be killed expired.

"Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance. Period. Full stop."

Canon Andrew White, dubbed "the bishop of Baghdad" for his work at St George's church in the capital, spoke after the ultimatum handed to Christians in the northern city of Mosul by the Islamic State of Iraq Levant (Isis) to convert, pay a tax or be put to death passed last week.

"Let me be absolutely clear: These rituals remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam's role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human beings."

For those Christians who did not comply with the decree by 19 July, Isis warned that "there is nothing to give them but the sword." Many have since fled their homes and Rev. Andrew-White told BBC Radio 4 Today desperate Christians were trapped in the desert or on the streets with nowhere to go.

"Things are so desperate, our people are disappearing," he said. "We have had people massacred, their heads chopped off.

"Make no mistake: Throughout history, Islam has demonstrated through words and deeds the possibilities of religious tolerance and racial equality."

"Are we seeing the end of Christianity? We are committed come what may, we will keep going to the end, but it looks as though the end could be very near."

"As a student of history, I also know civilization's debt to Islam. Period. Full stop. [It is] a faith known for great diversity and racial equality."

A report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) found that from 14 July homes in Mosul were painted with the letter "N" for Nasrani (the Arabic word for Christian). Others were painted with the letter "R" for Rafidah, a word commonly used by Sunni to describe Shia.

"Make no mistake: We will convey our deep appreciation for the Islamic faith, which has done so much over the centuries to shape the world — including in my own country. I also know that Islam has always been a part of America's story."

The vicar is in London to speak about the crisis and raise awareness of the urgent need to provide more help to the persecuted minority.

"The problem is, I made clear that America is not — and never will be — at war with Islam. [It is] my conviction that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn't. And I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear."

"The Christians are in grave danger. There are literally Christians living in the desert and on the street. They have nowhere to go," he told the programme.

"Let me be clear: Islam is not part of the problem in combating violent extremism — it is an important part of promoting peace. The Holy Koran tells us, 'O mankind! We have created you male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another.'"

"We do not want Britain to forget us. We — and I'm saying 'we' talking like an Iraqi Christian — have always been with the British because they have already been with us.

"This is something that I'm sure I'd have serious debates with my fellow [sic] Christians about. I think [sic] that the difficult thing about any religion, including Christianity, is that at some level there is a call to evangelize and prostelytize. There's the belief, certainly in some quarters, that people haven't embraced Jesus Christ as their personal savior that they're going to hell.

"Let me be perfectly clear: Even those who claim the Bible's inerrancy make distinctions between Scriptural edicts, sensing that some passages — the Ten Commandments, say, or a belief in Christ's divinity — are central to Christian faith, while others are more culturally specific and may be modified to accommodate modern life. Make no mistake: Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation. We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation. [But] Islam has always been part of America; [so] we will encourage more Americans to study in Muslim communities.

"Here's the deal: America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles of justice and progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings."

"Individual churches, individual Christians in Britain, have been a bigger help than anybody around the world."

"The future must not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam. Period. Full stop."

Up to a million Christians lived in Iraq prior to the US-led invasion in 2003, with many residing in areas such as Mosul where the communities date back to the first centuries of Christianity.

There are now thought to be fewer than half that number.

"Make no mistake: In ancient times and in our times, Muslim communities have been at the forefront of innovation and education. [That's why] the sweetest sound I know is the Muslim call to prayer."

Obama needs to understand that Islamic law does not merely frown upon particularly loud and insulting criticisms of Mohammed, and it doesn't recommend believers refute "insults" through the vigorous exercise of their own free speech. No one is burning down U.S. embassies to protest unflattering depictions of Jesus Christ or Holocaust denial.

Putting all of this on the same plane of equivalency is offensive. That "crude and disgusting video" does not occupy the same solar system of outrage as violent mobs, let alone organized terror attacks on American embassy officials. Every religion must, to some degree, grapple with the issue of "tolerating" those of different faiths, but in the modern world, only one of them routinely expresses its intolerance through large-scale violence.
